NEXT Steps wanted to create an urban agriculture training center and outdoor event facility
that introduced at-risk youth to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through business development training, special event management, environmental stewardship, community service and investigative research and discovery activities. However, we wanted to make it comfortable and inviting for their families, neighbors and community groups to learn and grow together as well.
Thanks to Lowe’s HEROES, Hands On Atlanta, United Way Gifts In Kind, The Atlanta Community Food Bank, The Atlanta Community Tool Bank and General Electric, NEXT Steps has been able to transform Atwood Community Gardens from an abandoned
neighborhood eyesore into a community outdoor recreation oasis (see before & after pictures).
NEXT Steps has incorporated many special amenities to make the introduction to gardening and farming a life-changing experience. We have designed field trips and social events that lovingly integrate our farm management activities with S.T.E.M. Curriculum experiments, team building exercises, cooking demos (upon request), arts and crafts, and other entertainment activities.
