The Ultimate Strategy Guide for the
Community On Demand Card Game Curriculum

Meet The Inventor

Dana Jewel Harris

Hi!

My name is Dana Jewel Harris.  I believe that STEAM innovation requires you to constantly define, measure, build and name the skills you have and/or need in order to create the opportunities you desire.

Throughout my entire life, I have used my skills to serve my family, my community and my country in sooooo many different ways! My STEAM profession is in strategic planning so a lot of times, the projects I work on are for things that don’t quite exist yet.  Because of this, I am required to have a ton of STEAM skills that include a great sense of humor, an awesome imagination, and the ability to add significant value to any team or project I work on.  As a result, I am constantly introduced to amazing opportunities and rewarded with many life-changing experiences.

I get asked quite a bit how I have been able to work on so many amazing projects, so I thought it would be pretty cool to turn my job into a card game curriculum.  Now I can teach youth and young adults all over the world how I use my STEAM skills to do all that I have done and will do in the future….so they can do it too!!!

What’s The Point?

When faced with a challenge, Community On Demand helps you remember the skills you have or identify the skills you need in order to thoroughly think through any situation and physically map out a strategic plan of action to solve it.

Why Is It A Game?

Community On Demand was created by turning all of the applied learning activities and best practices from my Atwood Community Gardens & Urban Farm Park (2010 ~ 2014, Atlanta, GA) into a business-in-a-box card game.

Through Atwood, I was able to strengthen the local economy by serving 1,500 visitors a year, launching a weekly farmers’ market to address local health disparities, supporting several home-based businesses and local growers as market vendors, and creating a national summer leadership training program for youth, young adults and volunteers.  Unfortunately, the land owners displaced me and forced me to shutter Atwood — losing access to the physical farm land and training site.  However, thanks to my STEAM skills, I am now able to offer the same Atwood training experiences digitally as the Community On Demand card game curriculum. #fromlemonstolemonade

The Employability Skills Framework

The Crucial Component for College & Career Readiness

Why Employability Skills?

Successful careers are built on solid personal and interpersonal skills. Defining, measuring, and building these skills— even naming them— can be challenging. The U.S. Department of Labor created The Employability Skills Framework which breaks down employability skills into three major categories:

  1. Applied Knowledge – critical thinking skills and applied academic skills
  2. Workplace Skills – communication skills, systems thinking, resource management, information use, and technology use
  3. Effective Relationships – interpersonal skills and personal qualities

The Employability Skills Framework was developed as part of the Support for States Employability Standards in Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Adult Education project, an initiative of the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, U.S. Department of Education. Framework development was guided by CTE, adult education, workforce development and business organizations, and twelve federal agencies.

The Employability Skills Framework advances a unifying set of skills that cuts across the workforce development and education sectors based on an inventory of existing employability skills standards and assessments.

The Employability Skills Framework

+ The Community On Demand Card Game Curriculum

The One-Stop Resource For Employability Skills Assessment

Community On Demand is a STEAM Education & Life Skills Development card game that uses game-based learning and strategic planning exercises to produce employable candidates with high-demand employability skills. Community On Demand balances real life subject matter with serious game play to help learners 1) produce defined learning outcomes and 2) transform their knowledge, capabilities, interests, STEAM skills and achievements into digital micro-credentials, service-learning projects, career-building opportunities and social enterprises.

When you add Community On Demand game-based learning tools to the Employability Skills framework, Community On Demand can be played four ways:

  • It can be used by individuals to play on their own
  • It can be used by educators/trainers as a creative supplement for their existing programs or activities
  • It can be used by business owners to redevelop their job descriptions, update their business plans, train new employees or re-train current employees
  • Learners, educators/trainers and business owners can join our Youth Chamber of Commerce and play the game with us through our Gamers & Mixers esports league.

As a result, learners, educators, trainers and businesses are able to measure nine (9) key areas of growth:

  1. Applied Academic Skills – reading, writing, math and scientific principles.
  2. Critical Thinking Skills – creativity, decision making, problem solving, reasoning, planning and organization
  3. Interpersonal Skills – teamwork, customer service, leadership, negotiations, and cultural awareness
  4. Personal Qualities – growth through responsibility, self discipline, flexibility, adaptability, a willingness to learn, integrity, professionalism, taking initiative and having a positive attitude
  5. Resource Management – management of time, money, resource and personnel
  6. Information Use – effectiveness in locating, organizing , using, analyzing and communicating information
  7. Communication – verbal, listening, comprehension, writing and observation skills
  8. Systems Thinking – understanding, monitoring, improving and uses of systems
  9. Technology – understanding and using technology

Building The Community On Demand Digital Economy

Just like Atwood, the Community On Demand digital economy is driven by six key focus areas that JEM Teams use to create work-based learning experiences and career-building opportunities while addressing socio-economic conditions that are negatively impacting their local communities.

Socio-Economic Conditions

Aging Infrastructure

To determine if your community’s land use planning process no longer supports the buildings and spaces that provide services, activities and opportunities for growth

Changing Climate

To determine if community members are noticing and feeling the impact from the gradual changes occurring in your community’s usual weather patterns

Depressed Economy

To determine if your community’s economy has slowed down and if there is widespread unemployment, lack of investments and scarce demand for consumer goods

Environmental Stresses

To determine if your community’s ecosystem is experiencing pressures on its environment caused by an increase in human activities (i.e. pollution) or by a natural phenomena (i.e. drought, pandemic, fire, flood, etc.)

Shifting Demographics

To determine if your community is experiencing trends from political and economic decisions that have shifted family expenses, wages, social activities, the population’s overall makeup and the availability of resources

Uncertain Energy Prices

To determine if your community needs to raise living standards, provide access to modern energy services, use energy more efficiently, protect the global environment and ensure reliable energy supplies

Key Focus Areas for Social Impact

  • Civic Leadership

Expands opportunities for application of high-demand employability skills within their local economies

  • Health & Wellness

Improves physical, mental, emotional and behavioral health of students and families by increasing awareness and utilization of the benefits offered by the health and wellness service providers within their communities

  • Agricultural Sciences & Urban Design

Identifies, assesses and converts underutilized areas into multi-use green spaces for community enjoyment and preservation

  • Introduction to STEAM Career Clusters

Creates youth-based employment opportunities within their local economies

  • Social Entrepreneurship

Provides financial literacy programming and fundraising opportunities through job shadowing, mentorship, school-based enterprises, service-learning projects and social enterprises that address socio-economic issues within each Community On Demand

  • Environmental Engineering, Exploration & Stewardship

Helps students understand their role in sustaining their natural and built environment by using digital media technologies to capture, value, present and celebrate the availability and effective use of resources within their community’s ecosystem.

CoD Card Deck

The Community On Demand card deck is an innovative 72pc pocket-size, card game curriculum that uses five color-coded achievement domains to help learners quickly define, measure, build and name their high-demand employability skills.

It’s “business-in-a-box” game play meets Course Standard #1 of all Career & Technical Education (CTE) curricula/Perkins V Comprehensive Local Needs Assessments (CLNAs), helps learners quickly assess up to 63 of their high-demand employability skills, and ensures learners are engaged in college & career readiness activities :

  • Career Awareness & Exploration – Helps learners identify and explore local resources within their community
  • Innovation & Entrepreneurship – Teaches economic & business development skills
  • Workforce Readiness & Personal Branding – Teaches project management and job readiness skills
  • STEAM Career Clusters – Introduced STEAM career clusters (industries) and career-building opportunities (pathways)
  • Leadership, Team-building & Problem Solving – Rewards development and implementation of creative solutions and effective leadership

CoD Skills Assessment Worksheets

The single player version of the Community On Demand card game is played using the Community On Demand Skills Assessment Worksheet. Learners are able to use the card deck with the skills assessment worksheet – a mapping grid used to track the growth of 63 employability skills they have, use or need at any given point during the life of a past, current or future project. It is recommended to have learners conduct skills assessments at least three times during a project (beginning, middle, end). Simply keep all dated copies of The Community On Demand Skills Assessment Worksheets in each learners’ achievement binders or folders to better help them track and celebrate their achievements.

Community On Demand Skills Assessment Worksheets are great for workforce development agencies, Career, Technical & Education courses, corporate hiring managers, filling out job or college applications, creating pitch presentations, developing mission statements or designing/conducting team projects. The Community On Demand Skills Assessment Worksheet also comes with game instructions and a think tank doodle space on the back to give learners extra room for mapping out their thoughts. Game play can be completed in one hour or less!

CoD Game Board

The Community On Demand Skills Self-Assessment Game Board is a reusable 18″ x 24″ dry-erase project-based mapping tool. The game board makes team-building fun as it helps learners visually assess the employability skills they have, need and use to successfully complete any project. By matching each skill card with its color-coded space on the board (based on use), learners will quickly visualize their contribution and efforts. Advanced use of the Community On Demand game board introduces learners to financial literacy, team building, social students, economics and entrepreneurship as they are able to calculate the contribution value of their employability skills. The game board comes game instructions and a think tank doodle space on the back to give learners extra room for mapping out their thoughts. Single and team game play can be completed in one hour or less!
